THE SECRET LIFE OF POWERFUL OWLS - 2026 REVIEWS
Woo Hoo! It was such a hoot to receive an email during Science Week 2026 from Michael Staff, a Beecroft local. He’s cleverly constructed a 3D model of a preserved Powerful Owl which is held in the Australian Museum using a technique known as ‘Photogrammetry’. This process involves taking hundreds of photos of an object (in the case of this Powerful Owl over 300!) and using specialised software to build a textured 3D model. As you can see from just this single image, it captures the colours and fine details of bird’s feathers and bristles. You can even explore the features of its prey – one of my favourites! I am gobsmacked, I should have expected a masterpiece, and it is but it’s so much more than that. ‘Mikey the Powerful Owlet: Saving Byles Creek Valley’ pays respectful homage to Mikey and his historic family, Marie Byles, the community and the great beauty around us.
CONGRATULATIONS it is a glorious publication.
